Hens and Chicks, The Vitko Collection

Hens and Chicks, The Vitko Collection

Hens and Chicks, The Vitko Collection shares the inspiring story of a young boy who started with a packet of seeds and eventually ends up with a world class collection of cacti and succulents from around the world. The collection includes many rare cacti and succulents, some of which other collectors have only heard of.

In 2009, Don Vitko from Minot North Dakota, donated his cacti and succulent collection to the International Peace Garden to be put on public display.  Vitko spent four decades acquiring his collection of more than 4,000 different species and 6,500 plants, making it one of the largest private collections in the world.

Includes more than 220 full color photos showcasing the beauty and unique symmetry of the plants in the collection.

Contains information on the anatomy of the plants, everyday uses and fun facts.  It is written for the casual reader and is a great resource for school aged children to learn from.

Traci and I visited the International Peace Garden yesterday! We were astounded by the cacti and succulent collection! It is an amazing experience. Many of the plants were blooming! Traci has friends from Kenya who were anxious to know if we saw blooms, as nothing was blooming when they visited. It was all delightful and very special. Also, Traci and I were the only ones in the enclosure during our visit, which also was an amazing experience.

I am so glad to have your book as a remembrance. What a treasure. I’m going to order one for my brother, who lives in Seattle.

I love it.  Actually I guess that is why I bought it.  You did an excellent job on it.

Just wanted to let you know that your book inspired me to visit the Vitko collection!  My mom and I drove up last week, and we were beyond impressed.  I would say that the better word is overwhelmed, even breathless.  Those cacti and succulents are amazing, and even more amazing was the fact that so many of them were blooming when we visited.  I was especially excited to see the one represented on the cover of your book.  Amazingly enough, it was flowering, but not fully opened like in your cover photo.  However, we saw another beautiful relative that was in its prime.  I’ve included my photo.  It doesn’t have the artistry of yours, but it gives you an idea of what we saw.  I’d say almost half of the cacti were blooming, and many succulents.  It was just beautiful!!  Thanks to your lovely book, we had a great mother-daughter trip, and we enjoyed seeing something truly extraordinary.  And even better yet, we were the ONLY ones in the greenhouses.  We had the place to ourselves.  It was fantastic!

Thanks again!
